19 Best Facebook Apps for Wasting Time ...

By Shannon

I don't know about you, but I'm just *amazed* at how many Facebook apps for wasting time there are. When I first started with Facebook, my favorite apps were the “send weird gifts” variety - virtual beer, a cat that plays jazz, a hot celebrity etc. There also seemed to be a ton of quizzes for random things-”Which nationality are you, really?” “Who's Your Celebrity Boyfriend?” “Which [insert TV show] Character Are You?” Ah, the good old days. Since I can't find gifts or quizzes anymore, here are some of my other favorite Facebook apps for wasting time. They are all free to play, although you can buy boosters if you'd like. For those on the go, many of them also have a free app for your iPod or Android.

FarmVille, FarmVille 2

FarmVille, FarmVille 2 On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Simulation games like this are great Facebook apps for wasting time because the game goes as quickly as you do. As the name implies, the object of this game is to create and manage a farm. Till land, grow crops, breed animals, visit and trade with your friends-you get the idea. This game has over ten million users, so you shouldn't have a problem finding people to play it with.

2

Words with Friends

Words with Friends On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This game is basically a Scrabble game you can play with people from all over the world. It's fun and easy to pick up, which is probably why it's one of the most popular games and apps out there. There's also Gems With Friends, Hanging With Friends, Matching With Friends...you get the idea. If you can't find these games on Facebook, you can definitely find them on iTunes.

3

Candy Crush Saga

Candy Crush Saga On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Think of this puzzle game as “Bejeweled” using candy rather than gems. The idea is to meet various types of challenges by moving the candies around in a certain way while other candy-themed enemies try to stop you. It's very, very addictive. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to buy anything to advance in the game; at this writing, I'm on level 385 and haven't paid a dime. It has over 600 levels and gets new ones all the time, so you'll have lots of time to play.

4

Trivia Crack

Trivia Crack On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This game is essentially an abbreviated version of Trivial Pursuit: you face off against friends by answering questions in six different categories, seeing who can collect all the “wedges” first. The characters - a crown, a sword, a globe -are a lot cuter than the plastic pie pieces most of us know best, but it has the same categories as the original Trivial Pursuit game I have in my closet. The basic app is free, although there is an ad-free version. Like the name says, it's really addictive.

5

Happy Dinos

Happy Dinos On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Does anyone here remember Yoshi from the Super Mario Bros. games? I thought he was cute. In this game, you're building a habitat for other cute and gentle dinosaurs you can breed into new species and share with your friends. With the help of some trainers, you can teach them to do tricks and give them what they need to be happy. It's a really cute game.

Angry Birds Friends

Angry Birds Friends On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This is just like the addictive iPod app, but with a social element to it. You can play story levels by yourself if you like, but this version allows you to send and receive boosters, compare scores with others and even play in tournaments. My tournament score is pretty bad right now, but that's only because those stupid pigs keep moving. Yeah, that's it. That's my story.

7

Farkle

Farkle On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This dice-roll game reminds me of when I used to play Yahtzee with my dad. Basically, you have 11 rolls to rack up as many points as you can. You can count ones and fives toward your score, as well as various combinations. You can stop at one roll but, if you keep rolling, you risk getting a FARKLE and lose all your points! It's very addictive and simple to play.

8

It Girl

It Girl On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This Barbie-esque game is probably the only time I can wear a bikini without scaring the kids. Take your character shopping around the world and try out different looks while wearing gorgeous clothes you never would otherwise. Even if you're not much of a “girly-girl”, you'll love it.

9

Bitstrips

Bitstrips On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This app lets you make caricatures starring yourself and your friends. They range from the mundane (“Shannon desperately needs coffee”) to the cute (“Jason serenades Renee at midnight because he's got a crush on her”) to the really strange (“Maurice walks in on Shannon trying to shave the cat.”). It's fun to see what people come up with.

10

Pet Rescue Saga

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This game is just adorable. It's one of those “clear-the-blocks” games where you click on groups of same-colored blocks to bring the pets down to the ground so they can get away. I'm not exactly sure what we're rescuing the pets *from*, but it doesn't matter; I just like watching the pigs squiggle off. They're cute.

11

Journals of the Unknown

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
A journalist is on her way to a major story when she gets lost in the woods. As the game goes on, you get to work your way through stories by that deal with the paranormal (like a modern-day Salem witch hunt) using a series of hidden-object and logic puzzles. It's obscenely addictive and great for mystery fans.

12

Criminal Case

Criminal Case On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This one isn't as involved as some of the other games, but the idea is to use a series of puzzles and hidden-object games to gather clues to solve a mystery. This time, you're playing a detective working alongside cops, forensic scientists and various other “crime fighters” to solve a murder from beginning to end. It's no Law and Order, but it's good for people who like shorter story lines.

13

My Singing Monsters

My Singing Monsters On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Just the front page of this app made me laugh out loud. Like other simulation games, the goal is to complete a series of quests to populate and develop a desert island. The hilarious part is what you're populating it with - crazy looking monsters that serenade you in thanks for your good work! You can mute them if you'd like, but annoying everyone else around you with the “songs” is half the fun.

14

Double down Casino-Free Slots

Double down Casino-Free Slots On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This game allows you to play any kind of casino game you can think of online, for free. Card games, slots, bonus spins-you name it, it's there. I can't tell if there are any “real-money” options, but there are so many games available that there should be something there for everyone. New games are added every week, so you'll never get bored.

15

Bubble Witch Saga

Bubble Witch Saga On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This game reminds me of "Snood" in that the object is to shoot bubbles at same-colored sections of a puzzle before it hits the ground. This time, you're working alongside a group of good witches who are trying to keep evil spirits from taking over their land. As you solve more puzzles, you make stronger and stronger potions to drive out dark forces from the land as you go. If nothing else, the first version has really nice graphics.

16

Status Shuffle

Status Shuffle On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
It's like those “band name generators”, except for your status message. Some of them are silly (“Beer-helping white men dance since 1881”), others truthful “(Angels sometimes block our path because we're headed in the wrong direction”), and others just plain stupid (“Things to do #74: Stand in the back of a crowded elevator full or strangers. Meow occasionally.”). Some of the messages were created by other users, so feel free to submit your own. Even if you don't change your status, it's fun to see what it comes up with.

17

Fortune Cookie

On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Again, this app is self-explanatory. You can easily spend hours clicking the cookie to get your “fortune” and not see the same one twice. I'm just sad that I can't eat this one, because I love the ones at restaurants.

18

Word Puttz

Word Puttz On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
Have you ever heard of a golf course owned by an octopus? You have now! This game has you creating words and crosswords to move your way through mini-golf courses owned by an overly-pedantic octopus who like to trip up his “customers”. It's cute and witty, perfect for those long waits at the doctor's office.

19

Mahjong

Mahjong On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
If you've never played this game, it's the electronic version of a Chinese tile game. The object is to clear the board by clicking on matching tiles. It sounds easy, but the tiles are arranged on top of each other in different shapes and you only have a short amount of time to get through to the bottom. It's definitely a workout for your brain.

These are just a few of the great Facebook time-suckers out there. Just so you know, all of the apps I've mentioned here worked fine on Firefox. If they don't work on yours, blame Facebook. Or your browser. Or something, just not me. What are some of your favorites? Do you have any recommendations for others, and can you point me toward some of the old gift and quiz apps? I need something different to do. Discuss.

Waste time! They definitely got that right

Paradise Island is awesome too!

Mahjong is definitely addictive, many different puzzles that can't be solved in under 5 minutes.

@kim you are perfectly right?
